In 2006, Massachusetts created the Safe Driver Insurance Plan (SDIP). Massachusetts General Laws sets out the rules for surchargeable incidents for those found to be at fault in an auto accident. Under the statute, the Merit Rating Board assigns the point values known as a surcharge. Most Agents understand the principals of the SDIP Rating factor used by an insurer, but let’s dig deeper to see how it works from the accident to the policy and how it correlates to the various insurance companies that file their own individual rating factors with the Division of Insurance.
